У меня вопрос

Вот я живу в Сан Франциско. Мне здесь очень нравится, потому что:

Это город. Я не могу жить вне города, у меня очень плохая реакция на самые лучшие, ближние и культурные пригороды и деревни.
Это берег, западный. В основном либеральная публика.
Здесь редко жарко, и почти никогда - очень жарко; здесь нормальная для меня влажность и я люблю облака и туман. Мужу нравится что здесь не очень холодно и нет снега, но не нравится отсутствие гроз.
У нас маленький ребенок, так что нужен комфорт в его времяпровождении и образовании.
Мы оба имеем возможность работать удаленно, то есть муж уже на 100%, а я на 90%.
По крайней мере в нашем уголке, здесь очень мало насекомых и грызунов, особенно таких которые меня кусают.

Мы не планируем переезжать, но мне интересно было бы посетить подобные города. Такой город должен быть:

Относительно легко досягаемым с обоих побережьев США (допустим, полет с одной пересадкой в нормальном аэропорту).
Дружелюбным к либеральным американцем с нестандартным гардеробом и наличием дополнительных дырок.
С возможностью относительно легко передвигаться и на общественном транспорте, и на машине.

Судя по моему опыту, сюда подходят Лондон, Амстердам, может Берлин. Но мне кажется что в Австралии или Новой Зеландии город тоже есть такие места, да? Или где-нибудь еще? Пожалуй, погода - один из важнейших факторов.

австралийские города замечательные, но слишком провинциальные, чтоб попасть под твоё определение "культуры." зимой там хорошо и тепло, а летом, подозреваю, может быть и жарковато.

I think it's almost intentional, very "anti"-European design. Most cities in that part of the world are beautiful, ultimately liveable, but basically serve as an outpost of sorts, on the way towards the great outdoors (which is truly stunning). The most cosmopolitan/ least provincial of them rates somewhere along the lines of Vancouver, i.e. nowhere near SF.

NZ *might* be different (haven't been there), but I doubt it, given their spectacular scenery.

P.S. I probably won't find it easily, but there was a spectacular reddit post on second-tier cities (like Boston), and why they can't overcome that second-tier status. Not sure if you ever saw it...

I haven't been in that part of the world at all! I can't say I'm much of an outdoorsy person, but what attracted me visually to that part of the world is the images of gray skies in NZ. People tell me that Australia is awesome, but as I've said, most people think warm weather is awesome, and I can not abide by that.

I'm a terrible reddit reader, but this is interesting, I'll go look for it!

As curious as I am about that part of the world, I'm not sure when I'll realistically have a chance to check it out. By then some of my priorities may change, but I do ultimately want to at least see some aspects of it.

With your clearly nomadic tendencies (who knows where you'll be living 5 years from now), I suggest you do give it at least a thought in the next couple of years. For the most practical reason of all - while you're on the West Coast, it's considerably easier to get to both Oz and NZ (reasonably short, non-stop flight). Plus, that incredible "color" thing you referenced earlier permeates the whole region - I still, on occasion, dream of that paprika-colored sand running through my fingers. (Мда, поэт я совсем не.)

My nomadic tendencies actually have atrophied! I'm not even a good vacation traveler anymore - pain in the butt, in more ways than one! But maybe in the future the planes will get faster, cheaper and more comfortable... yeah, right!

Точно? Тогда остается только метод "клин клином вышибают." Мой тоже не любитель, но после 30го полета он как-то легче стал переносить (хотя нудить не перестал).

Yeah, I quite like him. I mean, he does fly, and he flew to Russia and back with me, so his fear is not debilitating. But the discomfort and general pain-in-the-ass-edness is getting to both of us.
