What takeout can you get closest/fastest from your home? What's the best and closest?

For us, it's a Vietnamese Pho place. And it's probably one of the best options in the neighborhood. It's literally under our building, even though we have to walk around the block to get there. Tasty, cheap and fast - the only problem is when it's closed on Tuesdays.

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect it's the least profitable night?

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
According to what I've been able to find in a search engine, Tuesdays tend to be slowest and there is no particular cultural or religious significance.

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
And that happens to us all the time. Except we've never actually eaten inside this restaurant, we really just like being at home!

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
We almost never get delivery, but we drive as much as 15 minutes for takeout.

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Other places deliver, too, but it's usually faster to pick up!

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:26 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
And I would hate to live in a forest!

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
then everything is just fine :)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely!

There's this one user that very belligerently tried to convince me that I'm an idiot for wanting to live in the dirty, noisy horrible city and everything I could possibly want and need can be had in her nice, woodsy, quiet suburb. Well, maybe, but not my sanity or my sense of place!

[identity profile] kpoxa-e.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've lived in a suburb that was well-enough connected to the city that it shouldn't have been a problem (Arlington, VA), but I felt awful there. And I lived in a college town that was fine, but I suspect it's because I knew I'd leave.

[identity profile] meylersha.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Any ethnic food?

We almost never get delivery since it takes them far longer to deliver it than for us to pick up.

[identity profile] asyatka.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
How far away is the Chinese place?

[identity profile] asyatka.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:30 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Charlee loves aquariums, too! The actual SF aquarium sucks, but the one in the Academy of Sciences is awesome! But she'll take one in a doctor's office or a restaurant any day.

[identity profile] vg36.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:14 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, our Vietnamese is cheap! But it's sad how the Chinese in our neighborhood is not that great! One good dimsum place, but the place I used to order got a low inspection score. And once, I went to pick up instead of Andy and saw their kitchen - ugh!

[identity profile] vg36.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel better, there are like 5 different Thais within 10 minutes of walking. And all of them are awful! Like, really, really, really bad.

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I sympathize! Thai isn't my usual go-to, but I like it.

[identity profile] map-ka.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Из опробованных и одобренных - Thai, West Indian (both are pick up only hole in the wall type), Americanized Halal place run by Bangladeshis and another, more traditional, Pakistani (if I am not mistaken) Halal place. Those are the great ones. Then there is an OK Japanese place, a pizza place actually run by Italians, two salad/burger/fried chicken places (both non-chain, one is Halal). And we are still within 5 min. walk and those are just the ones that we've said we'd order from again.

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's why you and I are urbanites! Other than the Vietnamese, there are a half-dozen won't-poison-you Chinese places, decent dimsum, several pizza joints, a burrito place that tried to kill me and a plethora of cafes, including one with decent Mediterranean goods. But my sadness is that the other two decent burrito places closed. All of this within a 5 minute walk as well. Plus Whole Foods nearing the 10-minute mark, and a fro-yo shop as well!

[identity profile] leiacat.livejournal.com 2013-06-17 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Closest: thai and chinese. (there's also pizza in the same plaza, but it's too skeezy.)

My favorite is a little farther out - a vietnamese noodle place.

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
How suburban is your area? Like, when you say closest, how far of a drive?

[identity profile] leiacat.livejournal.com 2013-06-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's as suburban as it gets - Columbia is about the epitome of suburbia.

The Chinese and Thai are about a 3 minute drive, or a 7 minute walk. (Just got done walking from a pub in that same plaza, in fact). The Vietnamese place is about a 8-10 minute drive. My favorite sushi is about 12 minutes. The Korean supermarket and the Vietnamese bakery and the closest Korean steakhouse are clustered at about 15. Dim sum is 15, which is sad, because the one 10 minutes away, which I liked better, closed.

[identity profile] elarbee.livejournal.com 2013-06-18 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! I remember some guy at a DC-area party telling me that Columbia is the premier suburb between DC and Baltimore. And that's when I knew that I could never think about living there. But I'm glad to hear that it's at least walkable and has decent food!

[identity profile] leiacat.livejournal.com 2013-06-18 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
It has marvelous food (as might be evidenced by 3/4 of all of my posts being restaurant reviews - I make a point of staying in the county). Also, it has walking/biking paths, so one can theoretically walk or bike from most anywhere to most anywhere within the town. I generally rarely walk with intent to get places (except the library, 20 minute walk, 6 minute drive), but I absolutely insist on having nice places to stroll.

It's definitely not everyone's cuppa, but I love it here. I enjoy cities, but at this point I don't think I could trade all the green I have here for convenience of being more centrally located. (With the caveat, of course, that the green is close to great food, decent shopping, passable entertainment, acceptable work commutes, and reasonable access to dance venues.)

See, I don't really like the green. It brings allergies, bugs, and implies weather warm enough to produce it. Not that SF isn't green, but its greenery doesn't seem to be as bad for me. And I think I need to feel like I have greater population density around me.
