I don't like the "think of the children!" reasoning. I mean, there are reasons not to let something happen in a particular way, and there are reasons to shield children from stuff, but that particular excuse is overused and too unspecific. Similar to "ноэтожеребенок"!

I agree. There is also an element of guilt in it - what kind of person are you, that you weren't thinking of the children! For shame!

There is a difference. "ноэтожеребенок" is generally used to excuse a child behaving in a manner that parents ought to discourage and don't. "think of the children" generally involves purely hypothetical children and one's own prejudices of what said children should be sheltered from.
